Paper side-gusseted pouch
Paper outside, heat-sealable plastic inside; stands upright when filled with heavier products.
Full description
With a brown exterior and side gussets that open out for the fill, the paper side-gusseted pouch offers a simple, clear pack format. We recommend it for products where a paper look is important and no aroma barrier is required. The pouch is heat-sealable and made with a back seam, and when filled it takes shape according to the weight and distribution of the product. With your own artwork, the pack can also be designed as part of a uniform product range.
When does a brown paper pouch fit?
When selecting the right fill, we start from the composition and the storage requirements. This version is not an aroma barrier, and we recommend it for fills that contain no fat, as grease can leave stains on the paper surface. For products requiring a strong aroma barrier or special moisture protection, it may be advisable to agree a different material structure. The brown exterior is a good solution when the aesthetic concept is in line with the characteristics of the product and the pack fulfils its intended role throughout the whole sales route.
The gusset size shapes the pack
The side-gusseted structure takes up little space when flat, and after filling the two side folds make room for the contents. For the right pouch, the width, height and gusset depth must be chosen together. The fill weight is only one of the starting figures: a loose or chunky product may require more volume than the same amount of a dense fill. If you plan an upright display, a trial fill must confirm whether the base of the pack and the weight distribution provide enough support.
A heat-sealable closure after filling
The top of the pouch can be sealed with properly set sealing equipment. The fill level must be set so that the sealing band remains free and the side gussets are neatly positioned at the seal. Product residue or creased film can affect the evenness of the seal. This design does not include a press-to-close zip, so it is worth matching the pack size and the storage information after opening to the expected rate of consumption or processing.
Branding designed around the folds
The paper side-gusseted pouch can also be printed with a logo or custom artwork. For the brown surface, we recommend designing legible text with adequate contrast. The main product information should be based on the area visible on the filled pouch, because the gussets and the back seal divide up the pack. A common brand look can be kept across different pack sizes, but the proportions of the artwork and the placement of information must be adapted to the resulting shape for each size. A short product name and clear labelling aid identification even on a smaller front panel.
For the design, a product sample, the desired fill weight and a sketch of the intended appearance are useful. We agree the size, sealing and printing of the paper side-gusseted pouch to match these. If you would like to convert an existing pack, a sample of it also helps us assess the starting format. The aim is a paper pouch that is easy to handle in both filling and retail.
