Full description

Perforated BOPP film is a packaging material on rolls for applications where, in addition to transparent packaging, ventilation holes are also required. BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene film; the holes in the perforated version allow direct air exchange. The film has ventilation holes 1–1.5 mm in diameter. We agree the right application based on the condition of the product, the shape of the pack and the storage environment.

An open surface for ventilation

Perforation opens up the otherwise closed surface of the film at defined points. The number and distribution of the holes are therefore an important part of the packaging task: the required air exchange has to be designed on the finished pack. A different layout may suit packs of different sizes or different contents. The decision also requires knowing how the product sits in the pack, which surface remains exposed and what outer packaging the goods go into. Agreeing the perforation starts from these actual conditions.

Moisture and storage environment

Through the holes, the contents of the pack are in contact with the ambient air, so besides ventilation, moisture exchange is also decisive. The film should be chosen for products for which this contact is suitable. Ambient temperature and humidity, together with the condition of the packed product, shape the result. When selecting the film, it is advisable to observe a trial pack under the planned conditions so that adequate ventilation and the desired product condition can be assessed at the same time.

A pack formed from the roll

Perforated BOPP film must be agreed in a roll format that suits the packaging method. Width, core and unwind direction have to be matched to the processing equipment, and the position of the holes must be related to the surfaces of the finished pack. Folds, seals and the space needed for cutting together determine the usable surface. During a machine trial it is therefore worth checking not only how the film runs, but also the final position of the perforation on the actual pack. Fixing the cutting position helps to place the holes consistently within the pack.

Visible contents and orderly handling

The transparent film shows the product, while the formed pack holds the portion together. Markings should be positioned so that both the intended role of the ventilation holes and the legibility of important text are preserved. Cleanliness of the packaging environment and the temperature required by the product must be ensured throughout the entire process. When arranging finished packs, attention should also be paid to how they touch each other and what load the film is subjected to during handling.

For a quote for perforated BOPP film, please tell us the product, the required pack size and the purpose of ventilation. Knowing the equipment data, the storage conditions and the planned perforation, we will specify the roll version. At Kollár Pakk we design perforated film starting from the finished pack and its use, so that the version matches practical requirements.
