Peelable lidding film for sealable PP trays

The peelable lidding film for sealable PP trays is a transparent sealing material that can be peeled off the rim when the pack is used. The peelable, or peel, design allows tray meals to be opened conveniently, while proper sealing ensures the sealed pack is easy to handle. The material must be chosen to suit the sealing surface of the polypropylene tray and the packaging machine. In this way, the desired opening behaviour and the seal needed during transport can be designed together.

Opening from the tray rim

When the peelable lidding film is opened, the film separates from the sealed rim. For convenient use, it is important to create a grip area and even opening behaviour. The seal strength must therefore be checked from the point of view of both consumer opening and handling of the pack. The shape of the tray rim, the film and the sealing settings together influence the result. For finalising, a trial of the filled pack is useful, as it shows how easily the real product can be opened.

A seal matched to the PP tray

The film can be used on a suitable sealable PP surface. Besides identifying the tray, the condition of the rim and the filling process also matter: product residue on the rim can make the seal uneven. The required temperature, time and pressure must be determined on the machine with the specific combination. In this version the peelable film is not a gas barrier, so it can be chosen for conventional tray food packaging, matched to the product's storage conditions and actual use.

Reel size and machine processing

The 42-micron lidding film is available in 150 or 160 mm wide, 250-metre reels. It can be agreed for manual, semi-automatic and automatic sealing workflows, and can be contour cut on suitable equipment. When choosing the width, the space required by the sealing tool and film guidance must be considered as well as the tray. During the trial, the fit of the system can be checked by examining reel running, the cut result and the seal together. If you use several tray sizes, the suitability of the reel width must be checked with every tool concerned before introduction.

Presenting the product on the lid

The food remains visible through the transparent film, and with your own artwork the lid can become part of the brand's look. The print position should be designed so that both the grip area and the important product information work well. Peelable opening can be clearly indicated in the instructions given to the consumer. The conditions for handling and storage after opening must always be given for the specific food, and a legible place must be provided for them on the pack.
