The Multiform A2 semi-automatic tray sealer is worth considering for sealing trays of up to 260 × 195 mm and as deep as 155 mm. Tray depth is a particularly important factor in machine selection if the pack contains taller portions or a larger-volume filling. Automatic film feed and sealing provide a practical solution together with careful tray preparation and the selection of a suitable material combination.

Tray depth and flange contact

Besides the tray size, the highest point of the product and keeping the sealing area free must also be checked. The maximum depth of 155 mm refers to the tray the machine can accommodate; the fill level is determined by the specific product. The tool must support the tray flange properly, so the shape and the width of the flange also matter. The machine takes film up to 220 mm wide with a reel diameter of up to 200 mm. The sealing layer of the film must be chosen together with the tray material, and the seal checked on a sample pack.

Planning the film edge

The Multiform A2 has a cross-cutting knife only, so the size of the film overhanging the tray on both sides is determined by the reel width. The machine does not cut along the tray outline. The width of the lidding material is best chosen so that it fully covers the sealing area and the finished pack remains easy to handle. Even with a deeper tray, the film must lie evenly. During the trial, besides the seal, it is worth evaluating peelability, placing packs side by side and handling during onward transfer.

Nine programmes for product changeovers

The digital control offers nine storable programme settings. The sealing surface temperature is adjustable between 0 and 200 °C, and the value needed for the work must be determined according to the requirements of the tray and the film. Alongside automatic film feed and sealing, filling, tidying the flange and removing the finished pack must be adapted to the working routine. It is advisable to link programme identification to the material combination used. If the tray or the lidding film changes, the previous parameters must be checked with a new trial.

Positioning for daily packaging

The machine measures 295 × 450 × 550 mm, weighs 25 kg and requires a 230 V power supply. The housing is stainless steel and anodised aluminium, and the tool is made of PTFE-coated aluminium. Cleaning must be carried out in a way that suits the materials and the coating. When designing the work counter, also take into account stable handling of taller trays and changing the film reel. A clean tray flange left free is a condition for proper sealing, so the filling operation is best planned together with the machine sealing.
